Increasing Demand for Dementia Care and Early Assessment: Insights from RAND Research

As the population ages, the need for early detection and effective dementia care continues to grow. A recent study by RAND researchers highlights key factors influencing individuals' willingness to undergo cognitive testing and engage in dementia treatment, offering valuable insights for the future of dementia care and assessment.
The study surveyed individuals aged 50 to 70 through the RAND American Life Panel and found that when cognitive assessments and early detection tests for Alzheimer’s disease were free of out-of-pocket costs, around 80% of participants would opt for testing. However, the cost of these services plays a significant role in decision-making. When the cost of testing was $300, only 40% of individuals were willing to undergo a cognitive assessment, and 35% were willing to take an Alzheimer’s early detection test.
Beyond testing, the research revealed that treatment availability significantly influences demand. Participants expressed a greater willingness to follow through with testing if treatments were available that could help maintain independence and improve quality of life. Specifically, treatments that could add three additional years of independence were highly motivating.
At ImpactSense, we reflect on these findings and are committed to addressing the accessibility gap in dementia care. Our product, which utilizes gait analysis for early dementia screening, is designed to be both affordable and accessible to individuals in low-income brackets, those who live far from specialized medical centers, and those without regular access to a general practitioner. By enabling these tests to be conducted at geriatric centers, community centers, and pharmacies, we aim to bring dementia care closer to the people who need it most, ensuring that early detection and intervention are within reach for all.
This research underscores the importance of early detection, accessible care, and supportive policies to help individuals manage dementia effectively. At ImpactSense, we’re dedicated to providing these solutions, making a meaningful impact on individuals’ lives by increasing access to critical health services.
Key Points:
Cognitive testing for dementia is highly influenced by out-of-pocket costs.
The availability of disease-modifying treatments significantly increases demand for testing and treatment.
There is a growing need to make dementia care accessible to individuals with limited healthcare access.
ImpactSense provides affordable and accessible dementia screening through gait analysis, available at community centers, pharmacies, and geriatric centers.
